Moxabustion is the burning of an herb - Mugwort (Artemisia Vulgarus) - over specific areas of the body or on a specific acupuncture site. This may be done by passing a burning stick of mugwort near the body so that the warmth may be felt. It may be done by attaching a ball of moxa to an inserted needle. When the ball is set alight, the patient feels a gentle warmth in the area. Additionally, small balls of moxa may be placed on the skin and lighted. The practitioner removes the moxa as soon as the warmth is reported by the patient. The practitioner takes care to prevent the patient from receiving any burns. Any of the above procedures may be repeated to strengthen the treatment. Often for children or people of frail health, moxabustion will be used in place of needles. Moxabustion potentiates the treatment by preparing the area and drawing the energy to it for contact with the needle. |
